The Netherlands has some of the best mobile infrastructure in Europe — dense, fast and consistent from Amsterdam and Rotterdam to the smallest village. As an EU member it sits in the “roam-like-at-home” zone, so any EU-wide eSIM works here, and 5G is widely deployed.
Networks & coverage
Three operators run the market: KPN, VodafoneZiggo (Vodafone) and Odido (formerly T-Mobile NL). All three secured 5G spectrum in the 2024 auction and run nationwide 4G/LTE with broad 5G. KPN is repeatedly rated the best 5G network, while Odido leads on raw urban speed. Coverage gaps are practically non-existent — even rural and coastal areas get strong signal.
eSIM or physical SIM?
For most visitors an eSIM is the obvious pick: instant activation, no shop queues. A local KPN, Vodafone or Odido prepaid SIM gives more data per euro on longer stays plus a Dutch number, available at Schiphol and in supermarkets and phone shops. Travel eSIMs typically roam on KPN or Vodafone, both excellent.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only — use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal for calls and messages. If you need a Dutch number for SMS or voice, buy a local prepaid SIM. With 5G live across the country, expect very fast download speeds in the cities.
How much data do you need?
A few days of maps and messaging fits in 1–3 GB. A week of business travel or sightseeing with navigation and social media is comfortable on 5–10 GB. Remote workers and heavy streamers should choose 20 GB+ or an unlimited plan.

How we compile this data
Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.
Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.
Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
