Latvia has three mobile network operators — LMT, Tele2 and Bite — and all three run modern 4G LTE networks across the country, with 5G now live in Riga and other larger towns. As an EU member, Latvia falls under the bloc’s “roam-like-at-home” rules, so any SIM or eSIM bought in another EU country works here at domestic rates, and a Latvian SIM works across the EU. Connectivity for travelers is excellent and cheap by global standards.
Networks & coverage
LMT and Tele2 are generally regarded as having the best and most extensive coverage, with Bite close behind; in practice all three are strong across the populated areas. 4G LTE blankets the country including the capital Riga, Jurmala, the coast and the main highways, while 5G is concentrated in Riga and bigger urban centers. Even rural areas and the Latgale region in the east have reliable 4G.
eSIM or physical SIM?
Local operators sell cheap physical prepaid SIMs widely — LMT, Tele2 (under the Zelta Zivtina / ZZ brand) and Bite kits cost roughly €1–€7 and are available at operator stores, Narvesen kiosks, post offices, Rimi and Maxima supermarkets, and the Narvesen shop in Riga Airport (RIX) arrivals. International eSIM brands such as Airalo, Saily and Holafly roam on these same networks and are the most convenient option for short trips since you can install before you fly.
Data, calls & messaging
Local prepaid plans are data-heavy and inexpensive: Tele2’s ZZ brand sells bundles like 15 GB for 30 days at around €10, and unlimited weekly plans exist with all three carriers. International tourist eSIMs from Airalo and others are data-only (no local number or SMS), while a local physical SIM gives you a Latvian number with calls and texts included. WhatsApp, Telegram and similar apps cover most travelers’ calling and messaging needs.
How much data do you need?
For a typical week of maps, messaging, social media and some browsing, 3–5 GB is comfortable. Heavy users who stream video or tether a laptop should look at 10–20 GB plans. Because Latvia is in the EU, an EU-wide regional eSIM is a smart buy if you are visiting several European countries on the same trip.
