SIM Cards & eSIM in Austria

Europe · 18 plans

Austria’s networks are run by A1 (Telekom Austria), Magenta (T-Mobile) and Drei (3), all offering dense 4G LTE and rapidly expanding 5G across Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and the main valleys. Coverage is excellent in cities and along motorways and is surprisingly good in the Alps thanks to ski-tourism investment, though deep mountain valleys and high passes still drop signal. As an EU country, Austria falls under “roam like at home,” so EU eSIMs and SIMs work at domestic rates alongside cheap local prepaid options.

Networks & coverage

A1 has the broadest reach and the best Alpine coverage, Magenta is strong in cities and offers aggressive data bundles, and Drei is a solid value choice on urban routes. Travel eSIMs typically roam on A1 or Magenta, giving fast data in towns and along ski and lake regions. Expect reliable 5G in Vienna and provincial capitals and good 4G on the Autobahn; signal can fade in narrow valleys, on glaciers and on remote hiking trails.

eSIM or physical SIM?

An eSIM from Airalo, Holafly or Saily is the no-hassle choice: install before you travel and connect on landing at Vienna or Salzburg. Local SIMs are good value but come with a quirk – most Austrian prepaid SIMs carry a one-off ~EUR10 activation fee and may require ID registration. For a week or two a data eSIM avoids the paperwork; for a longer Alpine stay a Magenta or A1 prepaid bundle gives more data per euro.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are data-only, which suits Austria where WhatsApp and iMessage dominate. A local A1 or Magenta prepaid SIM bundles tens of gigabytes with calls and an Austrian number, useful for booking mountain huts, ski passes and restaurants. Because Austria is in the EU, a SIM bought here keeps working at home rates across neighbouring Germany, Italy, Slovenia and the rest of the bloc.

How much data do you need?

A week of maps, messaging and browsing fits in 3-5 GB. Two weeks of city-hopping with social media and photos suits 10 GB. Skiers and remote workers uploading large files should pick 15-30 GB – easy to hit with a local Magenta bundle that often packs 30 GB for around EUR10. If you only need navigation between alpine towns, a smaller eSIM is plenty.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
