SIM Cards & eSIM in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Europe · 18 plans

Bosnia & Herzegovina pairs dramatic mountain scenery with surprisingly cheap, modern mobile data. Three national operators cover Sarajevo (SJJ), Mostar and the main tourist routes with solid 4G, and visitors can pick up a generous tourist prepaid SIM on arrival or activate a travel eSIM before they leave home. Either way, staying online here costs very little.

Networks & coverage

Three operators split the market along the country’s administrative lines: BH Telecom (Ultra brand) in the Federation, m:tel in Republika Srpska, and HT Eronet around Mostar and western Herzegovina. All three run nationwide 4G/LTE that covers the cities, the Wájríá valley resorts and the main roads well; 5G is still in early/limited deployment, so plan for fast 4G rather than 5G. Coverage can drop in the remote canyons and high mountains popular with hikers.

eSIM or physical SIM?

A travel eSIM (Airalo, Nomad and others) is the simplest choice for a short trip — install it in advance and you are online the moment you land, no shop and no paperwork. A local BH Telecom “Ultra Tourist” or m:tel prepaid SIM is even better value per gigabyte and bundles a local number with calls and texts; the Ultra Start packs are sold at any BH Telecom shop, at airports and at marked newsstands and bus/train stations. A passport is needed to register a local SIM.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are data-only, so use WhatsApp or Viber (both ubiquitous in Bosnia) for calls and messages. The local tourist bundles are unusually generous — BH Telecom’s Ultra Tourist packs include 15–30 GB plus a few KM of call/SMS credit. Bosnia is outside the EU roaming zone but belongs to the Western Balkans Roaming Zone, so a Bosnian SIM gives you cut-price data when you cross into Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania or Kosovo — worth knowing if your trip is multi-country.

How much data do you need?

A few days of maps and messaging in Sarajevo and Mostar fit easily inside 3–5 GB. A week to ten days of normal travel use — navigation, photos, social media — is well served by 10–15 GB, which the local tourist SIMs supply by default. Heavy streamers, remote workers and anyone tethering should grab a 30 GB Ultra Tourist pack or a 20 GB eSIM; the marginal cost of more data here is tiny.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
