Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory on the southern tip of Spain — a 6.7 square-kilometre rock with one airport, one main street and one mobile network. After Brexit, Gibraltar’s telecom status sits awkwardly between the UK and the EU, so travellers should not assume a UK plan or a Spain/EU eSIM will simply work here. Coverage on the ground is good, but you need a plan that names Gibraltar.
Networks & coverage
There is effectively one carrier: Gibtelecom, which runs the territory’s mobile network (the GibNet/Gibtel brand). It delivers near-universal 4G LTE across the Rock and the town, with 5G now live in the main built-up areas. Because Gibraltar is so compact and densely covered, signal is strong almost everywhere a visitor goes — the harbour, the cable car, the town centre and the upper Rock nature reserve. A second player, Shine, also operates here but Gibtelecom is the network most travel eSIMs ride on.
eSIM or physical SIM?
An eSIM is the cleanest option. Several global apps — Airalo among them — sell Gibraltar-specific plans that run on Gibtelecom and activate over the air. This matters because coverage at the border is messy: phones routinely flip between Spanish and Gibraltarian networks, and a Spain/EU-only eSIM may either fail to register or bill you as roaming. A Gibraltar-named eSIM avoids that. Physical local SIMs from Gibtelecom exist but are aimed at residents, not short-stay visitors.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only; calls and texts go over the internet. Given the strong Gibtelecom coverage, that works smoothly throughout the territory. If you cross into Spain repeatedly during your stay, consider a regional eSIM that covers both — but check that Gibraltar is explicitly included, as it is frequently dropped from generic “Europe” bundles.
How much data do you need?
Most people visit Gibraltar as a day trip or an overnight, so a 1–2 GB plan is plenty for navigation, photos of the Barbary macaques and messaging. If you are combining the Rock with a longer stretch on the Costa del Sol, a slightly larger plan that pairs Spain and Gibraltar makes more sense than buying two separate small bundles.
