Croatia’s three operators – Hrvatski Telekom (HT, the T-Mobile brand), A1 and Telemach – all run broad 4G LTE with 5G live in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and along much of the Adriatic coast. Coverage is excellent in cities and tourist towns and surprisingly solid on the islands and ferry routes, though the rugged Dinaric interior and some national parks (Plitvice, Paklenica) can be patchy. As an EU country, Croatia is covered by “roam like at home,” so EU SIMs and eSIMs work at domestic rates, and operators sell convenient unlimited-data tourist packs.
Networks & coverage
Hrvatski Telekom has the widest, fastest network and the best island and coastal reach, A1 is a strong all-rounder, and Telemach is a competitive value option. Travel eSIMs typically roam on HT or A1, giving reliable data along the Dalmatian coast, in Dubrovnik and Split, and on most inhabited islands. Expect good 5G in cities and along the main coastal road; signal can drop in the mountainous hinterland and deep in national-park canyons.
eSIM or physical SIM?
An eSIM from Airalo, Holafly or Saily is the easiest route: install before you fly and connect on arrival at Zagreb, Split or Dubrovnik with no queue. Croatian operators also sell appealing tourist SIMs with unlimited data for a fixed number of days – great value for a beach holiday – but note these local tourist bundles are often valid only in Croatia, without EU roaming. For multi-country trips an EU-wide eSIM is safer; for a Croatia-only break a local unlimited tourist SIM shines.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only, which suits Croatia where WhatsApp and Viber are widely used. A local HT or A1 tourist SIM bundles unlimited or large data with some calls and a Croatian number, handy for booking ferries, apartments and restaurants. Because Croatia is in the EU, a standard (non-tourist) SIM bought here roams at home rates across the bloc, though the special tourist packs may not.
How much data do you need?
A week of maps, messaging and browsing fits in 3-5 GB. Two weeks of island-hopping with social media and photos suits 10 GB or an unlimited tourist pack. Heavy users streaming over long ferry rides or working remotely should pick 15-20 GB. Given how cheap Croatia’s unlimited 10-day tourist SIMs are, many beach travelers just buy one and stop counting gigabytes.
