Networks & coverage
Three networks underpin the market: Proximus (the former incumbent, widest coverage and best rural reach), Orange Belgium and Base (part of Telenet). Coverage across this compact, dense country is excellent on all three, with 5G now standard in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and other urban centres.
eSIM or physical SIM?
Since 2025 Proximus, Orange and Base all sell eSIMs in their stores, and global travel eSIMs (Airalo Eurolink, Saily Europe, Holafly) work nationwide — ideal if you want to be online the moment you land at Brussels Airport. Physical prepaid SIMs are sold in operator shops, supermarkets and press kiosks and remain the cheapest local option.
Data, calls & messaging
Local prepaid bundles pair a few GB of data with generous SMS and some minutes; a Proximus starter pack includes credit, data, SMS and minutes valid across Europe. Because everything is EU-wide, a Belgian SIM doubles as a regional travel SIM. Calls home outside the EU are cheapest over VoIP apps.
How much data do you need?
For a short city break of navigation and messaging, 3–5 GB is comfortable. If you are touring multiple EU countries on one Belgian SIM, step up to a 10 GB+ regional eSIM. Heavy streaming or hotspot use warrants an unlimited Holafly-style plan or a larger Saily/Eurolink bundle.
