SIM Cards & eSIM in Malta

Europe · 18 plans

Malta is small, densely populated and well connected, so getting online is quick and reliable across Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s and Gozo. As an EU member, Malta is covered by the bloc’s roaming rules, meaning any EU SIM or eSIM works here at domestic rates.

Networks & coverage

Three operators serve Malta: GO, Epic (formerly Vodafone Malta) and Melita. Because the islands are compact, coverage is excellent almost everywhere, including Gozo and Comino. 5G is live nationwide, with Melita and GO both promoting fast 5G on their mobile plans.

eSIM or physical SIM?

All three Maltese operators support eSIM. GO is the most convenient, offering instant remote eSIM setup through its app, while Melita activates by QR code and Epic may require a store visit. Travel brands like Airalo and Ubigi also sell Malta and Europe eSIMs. A physical SIM is still cheap and easy to buy locally if you prefer a Maltese number.

Data, calls & messaging

Local prepaid plans from GO, Epic and Melita bundle data with national and EU minutes and SMS, and Melita’s tourist-friendly passes offer large data allowances at low prices. International travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so calls and texts run through apps such as WhatsApp or Messenger. EU-wide regional eSIMs also work in Malta with no roaming surcharge.

How much data do you need?

For a short city or beach break with maps and messaging, 3-5 GB is plenty. A week or two with streaming, photo uploads and hotspot use suits 10-20 GB. Longer stays and heavy users should look at a 25 GB-plus local pass or an unlimited Europe plan.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
