Moldova is one of Europe’s best-kept connectivity secrets: data is cheap, the networks are modern, and 5G is already live in the capital. Three operators cover Chișinău (KIV) and the wine-country towns with strong signal, and visitors can use a travel eSIM or grab a remarkably cheap local prepaid SIM that bundles tens of gigabytes for the price of a coffee.
Networks & coverage
The market has three players: Orange Moldova, Moldcell and Unite (the mobile brand of Moldtelecom). Orange and Moldcell both run nationwide 4G/LTE and have launched 5G — Moldcell’s 5G reaches parts of Chișinău, Cahul, Ungheni, Căușeni and Bălți. Coverage is excellent across the populated centre and the main roads; it is reliable in the wine regions of Cricova and Mileștii Mici, though it can weaken in the rural far south and in the breakaway Transnistria area.
eSIM or physical SIM?
For a short visit a travel eSIM — Orange Travel, Saily, Nomad or Airalo — lets you land already connected with no shop trip. But Moldova is the rare country where the local prepaid SIM is so cheap it is hard to beat: Moldcell and Orange starter packs cost around 49 MDL (a few dollars) and come loaded with large data allowances plus local minutes. Buy them in operator stores in central Chișinău or at the airport; bring your passport for registration.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only — lean on WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram (all common in Moldova) for voice and chat. Local prepaid bundles pair generous data (25–40 GB is typical) with domestic minutes and SMS, often valid 10–28 days. Moldova is not in the EU roaming zone and sits outside the Western Balkans zone, so a Moldovan SIM is best treated as a domestic-only product; for onward travel into the EU or Balkans, a regional eSIM is the better cross-border tool.
How much data do you need?
A weekend in Chișinău with maps and messaging needs only 2–3 GB. A week of normal use — navigation, social, the odd video — fits inside 5–10 GB. Given how cheap local data is, a Moldcell or Orange prepaid pack with 25 GB+ is the obvious pick for longer stays, digital nomads or anyone wanting to stream and tether without watching the meter.
