Networks & coverage
Italy is served by TIM (Telecom Italia, with the best 5G), Vodafone and WindTre, plus newcomer Iliad. Travel eSIMs roam onto a mix of these, so coverage is strong in cities and along major routes. An eSIM is the most convenient choice for visitors: buy it before you travel, install via QR code and connect the moment you reach Fiumicino, Malpensa or any airport. An eSIM-capable phone is required. A physical SIM from TIM, Vodafone or WindTre is better for long stays or anyone needing an Italian +39 number; prepaid SIMs are sold at airports, operator stores and tabacchi, with passport registration required.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs in Italy are data-only, so use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal for voice and messages. A local prepaid SIM adds an Italian number with calls and texts included. How much data do you need?
A short city break with maps and social posts is fine on 3-5GB. For one to two weeks of touring with photo uploads and some streaming, 10-20GB is ideal. Remote workers and heavy streamers should opt for 50GB or an unlimited daily-cap plan. If your trip spans multiple European countries, a regional eSIM covering 40+ destinations is generally cheaper than separate local SIMs.
