SIM Cards & eSIM in Ireland

Europe · 18 plans

Ireland’s mobile market is led by Three, Vodafone and Eir, all running widely deployed 4G LTE with 5G now live across Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and most large towns. Coverage is excellent in cities and along the main motorways, with the usual weak spots in the mountainous west, parts of the Wild Atlantic Way and remote rural townlands. As an EU country, Ireland is covered by “roam like at home,” so any EU-bought eSIM or SIM works here at domestic rates, and visitors can choose between cheap local prepaid SIMs and international travel eSIMs.

Networks & coverage

Three has the largest subscriber base and strong urban 5G, Vodafone offers the broadest rural reach, and Eir rounds out the trio with solid city coverage. Travel eSIMs (Airalo and others) roam on Three, Eir and Vodafone, so you get the same towers as a local SIM. Expect fast 5G in Dublin and other cities and reliable 4G nearly everywhere on the road; signal thins out in Connemara, the Beara and Iveragh peninsulas and the boggy interior.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Both are easy in Ireland. An eSIM from Airalo, Holafly or Saily installs before you fly and connects the moment you land, with no shop visit. A local Three or Vodafone prepaid SIM is sold at the airport (WHSmith and SIM Local machines) and in town-centre stores, and gives you an Irish number plus generous bundles. For short trips a data eSIM is simplest; for longer stays a EUR20 local unlimited-data SIM is hard to beat.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are data-only, which is fine since WhatsApp, FaceTime and iMessage are universal in Ireland. A local Three prepay SIM bundles unlimited or 10 GB+ data with calls and texts and an Irish number, handy for booking taxis, restaurants and tours. Because Ireland is in the EU, a SIM bought here also keeps working at home rates across the rest of the bloc.

How much data do you need?

A week of maps, messaging and browsing fits comfortably in 3-5 GB. Two weeks with social media, photo uploads and some streaming suits 10 GB. Heavy users or remote workers should pick 15-20 GB or an unlimited local plan. Given how cheap Irish prepaid bundles are, many visitors simply grab a EUR20 unlimited-data SIM and stop counting.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
