Networks & coverage

Three operators run the networks: Síminn (market leader with the best rural and Highland coverage), Vodafone Iceland — now branded under parent company Sýn — and Nova (cheapest, strongest around Greater Reykjavík). For Ring Road trips and remote areas, Síminn is the most dependable; Nova is fine if you stay near the capital.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Physical starter SIMs are easy to grab on arrival — the 10-11 convenience store in the Keflavík (KEF) arrivals hall is open 24/7 and stocks Síminn and Nova packs. A travel eSIM installed before departure skips even that step. Most travellers choose a data-focused local pack or a Europe eSIM.

Data, calls & messaging

Local starter packs are often data-only or data-plus-texts; domestic call needs are light for most visitors, so internet apps over data usually suffice. Because Iceland is in the EEA, local SIMs roam across the rest of Europe at no extra cost, and global eSIMs cover data-only usage.

How much data do you need?
