Networks & coverage

Three operators run Estonian networks: Telia, Elisa and Tele2. All three offer strong 4G and 5G, with Telia’s 5G reaching speeds up to around 500 Mbps in urban areas. Coverage is excellent nationwide, including smaller towns and main roads, thanks to Estonia’s compact size and heavy digital investment.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Estonia is an eSIM-friendly country: Telia, Elisa and Tele2 all support eSIM, and travel brands such as Airalo and Nomad connect directly to Telia’s network. For most visitors an eSIM installed before arrival is the easiest choice. A physical SIM is still useful if you want a local number or a long-stay contract bought in-store.

Data, calls & messaging

Local prepaid plans from Telia, Elisa and Tele2 combine data with national and EU minutes and SMS. International travel eSIMs are generally data-only, so calls and texts run through apps like WhatsApp or Signal. Because Estonia is in the EU, Europe-wide regional eSIMs also work here without roaming fees.

How much data do you need?

A short business trip or city break with maps and messaging is fine on 3-5 GB. With Estonia’s fast 5G it is easy to use more, so a week or two of streaming and hotspot use suits 10-20 GB. Remote workers and long-stay visitors should consider 20 GB or more, or an unlimited Europe plan.
