SIM Cards & eSIM in Romania

Europe · 18 plans

Romania has one of the fastest and cheapest mobile networks in the European Union, making it an easy place to stay connected whether you are exploring Bucharest, Transylvania or the Black Sea coast. As an EU member, Romania falls under “Roam Like At Home” rules, so an EU SIM or eSIM works here at domestic rates.

Networks & coverage

Four operators run mobile networks in Romania: Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania, Digi (RCS-RDS) and Telekom (whose mobile arm is now part of Orange). Coverage is excellent across cities and main roads, with 4G reaching nearly the entire population. Digi is famous locally for its very low prices, while Orange and Vodafone have the broadest rural and mountain coverage.

eSIM or physical SIM?

All major Romanian operators and international travel brands support eSIM, so most modern phones can activate a plan by scanning a QR code before arrival. A physical prepaid SIM still makes sense if you want a local Romanian number or a budget Digi tariff bought in-store, but for short visits a travel eSIM is the fastest option.

Data, calls & messaging

Local prepaid bundles from Orange, Vodafone and Digi typically combine generous data with national and EU minutes and SMS. International travel eSIMs (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and similar) are usually data-only, so you make calls and send messages through apps like WhatsApp, Signal or Viber. Because Romania is in the EU, regional Europe-wide plans also work here without extra roaming charges.

How much data do you need?

For a short city break with maps, messaging and social media, 3-5 GB is usually plenty. A week or two of heavier use, including streaming and mobile hotspot, points to 10-20 GB. Digital nomads or long stays should look at 20 GB or more, or an unlimited Europe plan such as Holafly.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
