From Athens to Santorini and across the hundreds of inhabited islands, Greece has solid mobile coverage that makes an eSIM ideal for travellers. As an EU member it sits in the “roam-like-at-home” zone, so any EU-wide eSIM works here, and 5G is now live in the cities and many resort areas.
Networks & coverage
Three operators run the market: Cosmote (the largest, part of OTE/Deutsche Telekom), Vodafone Greece and Nova (formerly Wind). Cosmote has the widest reach including remote islands and ferry routes; all three run 4G/LTE nationwide with 5G in Athens, Thessaloniki and major tourist destinations. Note that some budget travel eSIMs roam only on the Nova network, which is the weakest of the three — check the local network before buying.
eSIM or physical SIM?
An eSIM is the hassle-free choice for island-hopping — no shop visits, instant activation. For longer stays a Cosmote or Vodafone prepaid SIM offers more data per euro and a Greek number, sold at Athens airport and in town centres. Premium travel eSIMs that use Cosmote or Vodafone give noticeably better island and ferry coverage than Nova-only plans.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only, so calls and texts go through WhatsApp, Viber or FaceTime. A local prepaid SIM is the option if you need a Greek number for SMS or voice. Holafly routes across all three networks for the strongest island coverage; Airalo’s Greece plan rides Nova.
How much data do you need?
Light use — maps, messaging, a few photos uploaded — runs 1–3 GB for a few days. A week of island-hopping with navigation, social posting and some streaming is comfortable on 5–10 GB. For unlimited browsing and streaming, an unlimited daily plan removes the worry.

How we compile this data
Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.
Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.
Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.

The lowest-cost option listed is Xipo Flex at €1.86 for 1 GB over 7 days.
eSIM plans activate instantly by scanning a QR code — no SIM swap or local store visit needed.
A physical SIM can be the better choice for older phones that do not support eSIM.
Check that your phone is carrier-unlocked before buying, and match the data allowance to your trip length.
