SIM Cards & eSIM in Uganda

Africa · 17 plans

Uganda’s mobile market is led by MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda, both with broad 4G LTE coverage across Kampala, Entebbe and the main towns. MTN has launched 5G in parts of Kampala, while Airtel is often praised for steadier signal in remote areas like Bwindi and the national parks — useful for gorilla-trekking trips. Both run shops at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) where you can buy and register a SIM on arrival. International eSIMs from Airalo, Nomad and Saily roam on these networks too.

Networks & coverage

MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda are the two big networks, both with strong 4G in Kampala, Entebbe and major towns. MTN offers limited 5G in parts of Kampala, but coverage is overwhelmingly 4G nationwide. Airtel tends to hold a more stable connection in remote regions such as Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and other parks where gorilla and wildlife trips go — worth weighing if you’re heading off the main routes. Travel eSIMs typically roam on Airtel.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Buying a local physical SIM at Entebbe is easy: Airtel and MTN shops near the information desk register your passport on the spot, as SIM registration is mandatory under Ugandan law. Local SIMs are very cheap and great for longer or upcountry stays. If you’d rather arrive connected, an international eSIM from Airalo, Nomad or Saily installs before you fly. For short city-focused trips an eSIM is simplest; for safari and trekking, a local Airtel SIM can give better rural coverage.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are data-only, and WhatsApp handles most calls and messaging in Uganda. A local MTN or Airtel prepaid SIM gives you a Ugandan number with cheap local calls and SMS — handy for coordinating with lodges, drivers and trekking guides in areas with patchy data. Local bundles are inexpensive: roughly UGX 18,000 for 5 GB over a week. For most travelers a data eSIM plus WhatsApp is plenty.

How much data do you need?

A week of maps, messaging and browsing fits in 3–5 GB. Two weeks mixing Kampala, Entebbe and a safari with social media suits around 10 GB. Heavy users who stream or work remotely should pick 15 GB or more. On gorilla-trekking and park trips, signal is intermittent, so a slightly larger allowance plus an Airtel local SIM helps you stay connected when you do find coverage.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
