SIM Cards & eSIM in Ghana

Africa · 18 plans

Ghana is one of West Africa’s easier countries for mobile connectivity, with cheap data and good urban coverage. The catch is SIM registration: local SIMs must be linked to a Ghana Card or passport, which makes a travel eSIM the faster option for short visits arriving at Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra.

Networks & coverage

Three operators serve the country: MTN Ghana, by far the largest with the best coverage and data network; Telecel (formerly Vodafone Ghana); and AirtelTigo. MTN is the default recommendation for travellers — widest reach across Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast and rural roads, and the most reliable speeds. MTN has launched 5G in parts of Accra, but the country is overwhelmingly 4G LTE, which is what you will use almost everywhere.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Buying a local physical SIM means registering it against ID — foreigners can use a passport, but the process takes time at an MTN service centre and the SIM itself now costs 15–20 GHS at official outlets. A travel eSIM sidesteps registration entirely: activate before you fly and you are online on landing, roaming onto MTN or another local network. For a short trip the eSIM is far more convenient; for a long stay, a registered MTN SIM is cheaper per gigabyte.

Data, calls & messaging

Local data is inexpensive — roughly 5.40 GHS per gigabyte, so 5 GB costs around 24 GHS. MTN offers a wide range of daily and monthly bundles dialled up through USSD codes. Travel eSIMs from global brands are data-only; for a Ghanaian number and calls you will need a registered local SIM. WhatsApp is the standard for voice and messaging over data.

How much data do you need?

City hotels and many cafés have Wi-Fi, so 3–5 GB comfortably covers a week of maps, ride-hailing and messaging. If you are travelling overland between regions, relying on mobile data for navigation, or tethering a laptop, a 10–20 GB plan is worth it — and at Ghanaian prices even the larger local MTN bundles stay affordable.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
