Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, part of the Comoros archipelago but politically part of France and the EU. As a result it has French-grade mobile networks and is well served by both local French operators and travel eSIMs.
Networks & coverage
The main operators are Orange Mayotte, SFR Mayotte and Only (Outremer Télécom, transitioning toward Free Mobile). Orange and SFR launched 4G/LTE in 2017 and Orange now covers more than 90% of the population; 5G is being deployed in select zones. Coverage is strongest around the capital Mamoudzou and the main island of Grande-Terre.
eSIM or physical SIM?
Because Mayotte is a French DOM, it is covered both by dedicated Mayotte eSIMs and, often, by France or Europe travel eSIMs — but you must verify that a given France/Europe plan explicitly lists the French overseas departments, as some exclude them. With solid 4G coverage, an unlimited-data short-stay eSIM or a 5–10 GB plan suits most visitors. For a quick trip, 2–3 GB covers maps and messaging. EU travellers should simply check their home plan’s roaming data cap, which typically applies in Mayotte under EU rules.
