SIM Cards & eSIM in Guinea

Africa · 9 plans

Guinea (officially Guinea-Conakry) is a West African country with a humid Atlantic coast and a mountainous interior. Mobile service is concentrated in the capital and regional towns, and visitors can pick between a low-cost local SIM and a travel eSIM bought before departure.

Networks & coverage

The leading operators are Orange Guinea, MTN Guinea (formerly Areeba) and Cellcom. The best and most reliable coverage is in the capital Conakry (CKY) and along the main coastal corridor, with 4G/LTE in urban areas and 3G or 2G across much of the rest of the country. There is no commercial 5G, and remote inland regions can have patchy or no signal.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Local Guinean operators sell physical prepaid SIMs but do not currently offer consumer eSIM profiles, so any eSIM you use will be an international travel eSIM. A local Orange or MTN SIM is the cheapest route and requires passport registration. A travel eSIM is the convenient alternative for short trips, letting you connect on arrival without finding a vendor.

Data, calls & messaging

Local SIMs give you a Guinean number with calls, SMS and affordable data bundles. Travel eSIMs from global providers are data-only, so they deliver internet access but no number; voice and messaging go through apps like WhatsApp. Expect decent 4G in Conakry and slower fallback speeds once you leave the main centres.

How much data do you need?

Light use — navigation, email and chat — is fine on 1–2 GB for a short stay. A week of more active browsing and occasional uploads is comfortable on 3–5 GB. Given coverage limits outside the capital, most travellers choose a modest data-only eSIM rather than relying on streaming.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
