SIM Cards & eSIM in Malawi

Africa · 17 plans

Malawi, the “Warm Heart of Africa,” is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa best known for Lake Malawi — a vast freshwater lake that dominates its eastern border and draws divers, snorkellers, and beach travellers. The capital is Lilongwe (airport code LLW), while Blantyre is the commercial hub in the south.

Networks & coverage

Two operators carry the bulk of traffic: TNM (Telekom Networks Malawi), the home-grown operator, and Airtel Malawi, part of the pan-African Airtel group. Both run 4G/LTE in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, and the main lakeshore resorts. Coverage is solid along the M1 highway and around the lake’s developed beaches, but weakens in the highlands, national parks, and remote villages, where 3G or no signal is common.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Local SIMs require passport registration and can mean a queue at an Airtel or TNM shop. Travel eSIMs are the hassle-free alternative: Airalo’s Malawi eSIM runs on the Airtel network and activates on arrival, and a regional Africa eSIM (Ubigi or Airalo) suits multi-country trips. Note that travel-eSIM data in Malawi tends to be among the pricier in the region, so compare against a local bundle if you are staying a while.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are data-only — rely on WhatsApp for calls and texts, which is how most communication happens locally. For a local number, mobile-money (Airtel Money / TNM Mpamba), and the cheapest data, buy a physical Airtel or TNM SIM in Lilongwe or Blantyre and top up with a data bundle.

How much data do you need?

For a few days of maps and messaging, 1–2 GB is enough. A week around Lake Malawi with photo uploads and light browsing fits comfortably in 3–5 GB. If you plan to stream or work online from a lakeside lodge, lean toward 5 GB or more — but expect to use most of it where 4G is actually available.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
