Networks & coverage

Gabon’s mobile landscape is a duopoly between Airtel Gabon and Moov Africa Gabon (formerly Gabon Telecom / Libertis). Both run 4G/LTE that is solid across Libreville, Port-Gentil and the main coastal corridor, thinning to 3G or 2G as you head inland toward Lopé or Franceville. There is no live 5G network for travellers, so plan around 4G as the realistic ceiling.

eSIM or physical SIM?

If your phone supports eSIM, a travel eSIM from a global provider is the smoothest option: you install it before departure and connect automatically on arrival, with no airport queue and no local-registration paperwork. A local Airtel physical SIM is cheaper per gigabyte and gives you a Gabonese number for mobile money and calls, but registration requires your passport and is only reliably available at the Airtel store at Libreville airport (cash only).

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs for Gabon are almost always data-only — calls and texts run over WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage on the data connection. A local prepaid SIM adds a real number with voice and SMS, useful if you need to call hotels, taxis or local contacts. How much data do you need?

For a short business trip leaning on email, maps and messaging, 1–3 GB over a week is comfortable. A two-to-three-week stay with regular browsing and the occasional video call is better served by a 5 GB monthly plan, while heavy streaming or tethering pushes you toward 10 GB. Because Gabon runs on 4G, video will consume data quickly — download maps and media over Wi-Fi where you can.
