SIM Cards & eSIM in Qatar

Middle East · 19 plans

Qatar has world-class mobile infrastructure built out for the 2022 World Cup, split between Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar, both running dense 5G across Doha and the populated areas. Coverage is excellent throughout the capital, Lusail, the airport, malls and along the main highways, with reliable signal extending to most of the small peninsula. Travelers can pick up a visitor SIM at Hamad International Airport or install a travel eSIM before arrival.

Networks & coverage

Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar both deliver outstanding nationwide 4G and very strong 5G, among the fastest in the region. Ooredoo has the larger footprint and a dedicated visitor-SIM lineup; Vodafone Qatar is highly competitive in Doha and is the network many travel eSIMs roam on. Given Qatar’s compact size, coverage gaps are minimal — you’ll have fast data across the city, the airport and the desert excursion routes alike.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Ooredoo sells tourist-focused Visitor SIMs at Hamad International Airport with bundled data and local minutes, and a local SIM gives you a Qatari number for bookings and deliveries. A travel eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi) is the install-before-you-fly option that has you online the moment you land — convenient for a short layover or business stop. One practical note: which network you land on can affect how app-based calling behaves, so read the messaging section below before choosing.

Data, calls & messaging

This is the key Qatar quirk. Qatar regulates internet-based voice (VoIP), so app-to-app calling — WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, Viber — is frequently blocked or unreliable on local networks. In-app text messaging, email and browsing all work fine; it’s specifically the voice/video calling that is affected. Because the restriction applies to traffic crossing Qatari networks, even a roaming travel eSIM may hit the same block when it routes through a local network — though some travelers find an international eSIM that routes differently, or a VPN, restores app calling. Treat it as variable rather than guaranteed, and keep regular cellular minutes (from a local SIM or visitor plan) as a fallback for calls.

How much data do you need?

A few days in Doha with maps, messaging and browsing fits easily in 3–5 GB. A week with social media, photo uploads and some streaming suits around 10 GB. Business travelers and heavy streamers should plan for 15–20 GB. Given Qatar’s superb 5G, data-heavy use is comfortable — and if app calling matters to you, budget for either a visitor SIM with real minutes or a VPN-capable plan rather than relying on WhatsApp voice alone.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
