Networks & coverage
Three operators serve the country: Omantel (the incumbent, with the broadest coverage), Ooredoo Oman, and Vodafone Oman (the newest entrant). Coverage along the coast and the main Muscat–Nizwa–Sur corridors is strong. Remote desert and mountain areas rely on 4G or fall back to slower service, and deep canyons or off-road tracks can lose signal entirely. In Muscat, Salalah and other urban centres, 5G is genuinely available on all three networks, so city data speeds are excellent.
eSIM or physical SIM?
A travel eSIM is the fastest way to land online and is ideal if you mostly need data and maps. A local physical SIM — Omantel, Ooredoo or Vodafone — gives you the best price on large data bundles plus a local number and pooled minutes, and the airport and mall kiosks register the SIM against your passport. If you want 5G speeds in the cities at local prices, a physical tourist SIM is the way to go; for a short, data-only trip, an eSIM keeps things simple.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only, with calls and texts handled through apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime. Local Omani tourist packs typically bundle data with national and international minutes and SMS — Omantel’s Tourist Pack and Ooredoo’s tiered tourist SIMs are popular and include voice allowances. Note that some VoIP calling apps can be restricted on local networks, so a local number with real minutes is useful for in-country calls.
How much data do you need?
A week of navigation, messaging and moderate browsing fits comfortably in 5–10 GB. Light travellers can get by on 2 GB, while anyone streaming, video-calling home, or working from a laptop should budget 15 GB or more. Local tourist packs scale from about 8 GB up to unlimited tiers, so heavy users are well served by an Ooredoo or Omantel SIM bought on arrival.
