SIM Cards & eSIM in Iraq

Middle East · 15 plans

Iraq has a competitive mobile market with three national operators and broad 4G coverage across its cities. Whether you are travelling to Baghdad, the Kurdistan region around Erbil, or the southern provinces, getting connected is straightforward with either a travel eSIM or a local prepaid SIM.

Networks & coverage

Three operators compete nationally: Zain Iraq, Asiacell, and Korek. All run 4G/LTE networks covering Baghdad, Basra, Mosul, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and other population centres, with Asiacell and Korek particularly strong in the Kurdistan region in the north and Zain widely used across the centre and south. Coverage thins out in remote desert and rural areas, but the major cities and travel corridors are well served.

5G is not yet available for general use, so expect a 4G/LTE experience, which is stable across urban areas.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Travel eSIMs from Airalo, Saily, Holafly, and others work in Iraq, typically roaming on Zain or Korek. They are the easiest option for short business or transit trips — install before arrival and connect on landing, with no local registration paperwork. These plans are data-only.

A local physical SIM from Zain, Asiacell, or Korek can be cheaper for longer stays and gives you a local number, but buying one usually requires showing your passport for registration. SIMs are available at operator shops and at Baghdad and Erbil airports.

Data, calls & messaging

eSIM plans cover data only, so use WhatsApp or similar apps for voice and messaging over your data connection. A local prepaid SIM gives you an Iraqi number plus daily, weekly, and monthly bundles — Zain and Asiacell both sell low-cost recurring data packs and bundles that include popular social apps.

How much data do you need?

For a short trip of maps, messaging, and email, 1–3 GB is plenty. A week or more of regular browsing and social use is comfortable on 5 GB. For heavier streaming, hotspotting, or an extended stay, choose 10 GB or one of the local unlimited-style monthly packs.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
