Iran has a large, modern mobile market served by three national operators, but connectivity for visitors comes with caveats found in few other countries. Two facts shape every traveler’s decision: heavy state internet filtering, and US sanctions that lock most global travel eSIMs out of the country. Plan around both before you arrive, and check current travel advisories for the latest situation.
Networks & coverage
Three carriers cover the country: MCI (Hamrah-e Aval), Irancell (MTN) and the smaller RighTel. MCI and Irancell have the widest reach, with solid 4G/LTE across Tehran, major cities and most tourist routes; 5G exists but is limited to pockets of large cities. Coverage thins out across deserts and remote mountain areas.
The bigger issue is not signal but censorship. Iran operates extensive internet filtering, and many popular sites and apps are blocked or throttled. Access to services like Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram varies over time and during periods of unrest can be cut entirely. VPNs are widely used by locals to get around blocks, but VPN use itself is officially restricted and reliability fluctuates. Treat unfiltered access as something you cannot count on.
eSIM or physical SIM?
This is where Iran is unusual. Because of US sanctions, most mainstream travel eSIM brands — including Airalo — do not sell plans for Iran at all. A handful of niche providers route through the MCI network and do offer Iran eSIMs, but coverage, support and reliability are less proven than elsewhere.
For most travelers the dependable route is a local tourist SIM bought on arrival. MCI, Irancell and RighTel all run staffed booths in the arrivals hall at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA), generally open around the clock. You must register the SIM with your passport, which is standard and required by law. A physical local SIM gives you a real Iranian number plus the best in-country data rates.
Data, calls & messaging
A local prepaid SIM gives you both data and a callable Iranian number — useful for hotels, taxis and domestic services. The niche travel eSIMs that do cover Iran are typically data-only, so you cannot make standard calls or send SMS on them.
For messaging, expect friction. Apps that rely on blocked services may not work without a VPN, and even then performance is inconsistent. Many travelers download offline maps and translation tools in advance and treat reliable messaging as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
How much data do you need?
For a typical trip leaning on maps, messaging and occasional browsing, 3–5 GB over a couple of weeks is a reasonable starting point. Local SIMs make topping up cheap and easy at carrier shops or kiosks if you run low. Heavy users streaming or tethering will want a larger local bundle, since per-GB rates on a local SIM are far cheaper than the niche eSIM options. Buy modest and top up rather than overcommitting to an eSIM that may underperform.
