Networks & coverage
Three operators run the market: Turkcell (the largest, best rural reach), Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom. All run nationwide 4G/LTE; 5G rollout is underway in major cities. eSIM or physical SIM?
An eSIM is strongly preferred here. Local tourist SIMs sold at Istanbul (IST/SAW) and Antalya airports are aggressively up-sold — expect $35–$50 for 20–30 GB, two to three times what locals pay — and a physical local SIM triggers the 120-day IMEI block on an unregistered foreign phone. Travel eSIM brands avoid the registration trap because they connect as roaming data.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only; use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Telegram for calls and messages (note Turkey occasionally throttles some VoIP apps, but they generally work over a roaming eSIM). For a Turkish number you would need a local SIM and would face the IMEI registration requirement on stays beyond ~120 days.
How much data do you need?
Light maps-and-messaging use fits 1–2 GB for a few days. A week of sightseeing with navigation, social media and some streaming is comfortable on 5–10 GB. Heavy users or longer stays should pick 20 GB+ or an unlimited plan.
