SIM Cards & eSIM in Indonesia

Asia · 19 plans

Indonesia spans thousands of islands, so network quality varies — but in Bali, Jakarta and other tourist centres connectivity is strong and cheap. Most visitors buy a Telkomsel tourist SIM on arrival or install a travel eSIM before they land in Bali.

Networks & coverage

Telkomsel is widely regarded as the best network with the most extensive island coverage; Indosat (IM3), XL Axiata, Smartfren and Tri (3) are the other main operators. 4G is broad across populated areas and 5G is live in parts of Jakarta, Bali and major cities, though coverage thins on remote islands. Travel eSIM brands such as Airalo and Holafly resell capacity, typically on Telkomsel or Indosat.

eSIM or physical SIM?

If your phone supports eSIM, buy online and install before you fly. Physical tourist SIMs are sold at Ngurah Rai (Bali) and Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) airports, plus operator GraPARI stores; passport registration is required and counter prices are higher than buying in town. Check your handset is carrier-unlocked.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are typically data-only, while local Telkomsel SIMs include call and SMS credit. WhatsApp is by far the dominant messaging and calling app in Indonesia, so a data-only plan works for most travellers.

How much data do you need?

As a rough guide: 3 GB for a few days, 10–20 GB for one-to-two weeks of a Bali trip, or an unlimited plan for heavy streaming, navigation and tethering. Most travellers spend $8–$17 total for a one-to-two week visit.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
