SIM Cards & eSIM in Mongolia

Asia · 17 plans

Mongolia is a land of extremes for connectivity: fast, reliable mobile data across Ulaanbaatar (UB) and provincial towns, then long stretches of the steppe and Gobi with no signal at all. A travel eSIM gets you online the instant you land at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, while Mobicom’s tourist SIM is the value option for overland trips.

Networks & coverage

The four operators are Mobicom (the largest and best for rural reach), Unitel, Skytel and G-Mobile. Coverage is strong throughout Ulaanbaatar and along main roads connecting aimag (provincial) centres. Out in the countryside — the Gobi, the western mountains, nomadic camps — expect frequent dead zones regardless of carrier. 4G/LTE is the norm; some 5G is live in Ulaanbaatar, but outside the capital you will be on 4G.

eSIM or physical SIM?

A travel eSIM (Airalo, Nomad, Saily) is the simplest path for city-focused trips and short stays — no counter, no passport copy, online before you leave the terminal. If you are heading into the countryside, Mobicom’s physical Tourist SIM is worth it because Mobicom has the broadest rural footprint, and you can top it up at shops in aimag centres. Many overland travellers carry both: an eSIM for the city and a Mobicom SIM for the steppe.

Data, calls & messaging

Facebook and Facebook Messenger are dominant for messaging and calls in Mongolia, with WhatsApp used by international travellers. Travel eSIMs are data-only, so calls go over VoIP. A local Mobicom number helps for domestic bookings, guesthouses and ger-camp arrangements.

How much data do you need?

For a UB-based trip of a week, 3–5 GB is plenty since you will often be on Wi-Fi. Overland and Gobi travellers actually use less mobile data simply because there is no coverage, but a 5–10 GB plan gives breathing room for the connected stretches and offline-map downloads before you set out.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.

The lowest-cost option listed is Mobicom at $5.00 for 3 GB over 30 days.

  • eSIM plans activate instantly by scanning a QR code — no SIM swap or local store visit needed.
  • A physical SIM can be the better choice for older phones that do not support eSIM.
  • Check that your phone is carrier-unlocked before buying, and match the data allowance to your trip length.
