SIM Cards & eSIM in Georgia

Georgia (the South Caucasus country, not the US state) is one of the cheapest places in the wider region to buy mobile data, with tourist SIM packs sold right in the Tbilisi airport arrivals hall. The country sits outside the EU, so EU “roam-like-home” rules do not apply here — you buy a local Georgian plan or a Caucasus/Asia regional eSIM instead.

Networks & coverage

Three operators run the market: Magti (Magticom), Silknet and Cellfie (the former Beeline). Magti has the strongest nationwide reach, including the mountain regions of Svaneti, Kazbegi and Vardzia that matter to hikers. Silknet is a solid second in tourist areas, while Cellfie is cheapest on data but thins out quickly once you leave Tbilisi and Batumi.

eSIM or physical SIM?

If your phone supports eSIM, a travel eSIM from Airalo, Nomad or a Caucasus regional plan lets you land connected with no kiosk queue. For the absolute lowest price, though, a physical local SIM bought at the airport with your passport still wins — a Magti or Cellfie starter pack costs only a few dollars. Local SIMs require passport registration.

Data, calls & messaging

Local tourist packs bundle generous data with some local minutes and SMS; Magti’s entry pack adds free texting and Cellfie pushes very large data buckets. Travel eSIMs are typically data-only, though some Airalo Georgia plans now include a local number and SMS. Calls home are cheapest over WhatsApp, Viber or other VoIP apps.

How much data do you need?

For a one to two week trip of maps, messaging and the odd video, 5–10 GB is plenty and very affordable here. Heavy streamers or anyone tethering a laptop should look at Cellfie’s large local buckets or a 20 GB eSIM. Because data is so cheap in Georgia, it rarely pays to ration tightly.
