SIM Cards & eSIM in Philippines

Asia · 18 plans

The Philippines is a sprawling archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, so staying connected takes a little planning. Tourist eSIMs and prepaid SIMs are cheap and easy to buy, with bundles built specifically for visitors at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Manila) and Mactan–Cebu. A local plan is essential for booking ferries, ride-hailing and island-hopping logistics.

Networks & coverage

Three carriers compete: Globe and Smart are the established giants with the widest reach across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, while DITO is the newer third entrant offering aggressive pricing and solid metro coverage. Coverage is strong in cities and tourist hubs like Boracay, Palawan and Cebu, but can thin out on remote islands and in the mountains.

5G is live and expanding fast across Metro Manila, Cebu and other urban centres on all three networks, though 4G LTE remains the workhorse for most of the country.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Tourist eSIMs are very common here. Globe, Smart and DITO all sell native prepaid eSIMs, and global brands like Airalo and Holafly cover the country too. A physical SIM is handy if you want a local number, but the eSIM route saves you queueing at the airport.

Note that SIM registration with a passport is mandatory by law, even for eSIMs, so allow a few minutes to activate.

Data, calls & messaging

Facebook Messenger is overwhelmingly dominant in the Philippines — far more than WhatsApp — and many local businesses are reachable only via Messenger or Facebook pages. Viber is also widely used. Most tourist bundles throw in unlimited local calls and texts to all networks alongside the data.

How much data do you need?

A 15–20 GB bundle comfortably covers a two-week trip of maps, social media and messaging. If you stream, video-call family back home or tether a laptop, the 60–120 GB tourist packs from Globe or Smart are excellent value. Data is metered generously here, so most visitors buy big and relax.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
