SIM Cards & eSIM in Armenia

Asia · 15 plans

Armenia is one of the easier Caucasus countries for travellers to get connected: local SIMs are cheap and registration is light, and a travel eSIM has you online the moment you land at Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) outside Yerevan. Either way, expect fast, affordable data.

Networks & coverage

Three operators compete: Team Telecom Armenia (the former Beeline/VEON brand), Viva-MTS (the largest and widest-reaching) and Ucom. 4G/LTE covers Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor and the main highways well, including the road to Lake Sevan and the Garni/Geghard sights. Coverage weakens in remote mountain valleys and parts of the south toward Tatev. 5G is only lightly deployed, so travellers should plan around 4G.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Local SIMs from Viva-MTS or Ucom are inexpensive and only need your passport — no onerous device registration — making a physical SIM genuinely attractive here. That said, a travel eSIM (Airalo, Saily, Nomad) still wins on convenience for short trips: no shop visit, instant activation, and useful if you are also crossing into Georgia. Weigh cheap local data against eSIM simplicity based on your trip length.

Data, calls & messaging

WhatsApp, Viber and Telegram are all widely used in Armenia, with Viber especially common for calls. Travel eSIMs are data-only, so calls run over these apps. A local Viva-MTS or Ucom number is handy for taxis, guesthouses and local OTPs if you stay a while.

How much data do you need?

For a week around Yerevan and nearby day trips, 3–5 GB is ample. Bump to 10 GB if you stream, tether, or tour widely — Tatev, Dilijan, the southern route — where you will rely on mobile data and offline maps between towns.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.

  • eSIM plans activate instantly by scanning a QR code — no SIM swap or local store visit needed.
  • A physical SIM can be the better choice for older phones that do not support eSIM.
  • Check that your phone is carrier-unlocked before buying, and match the data allowance to your trip length.
