Laos is a relaxed, low-cost country for mobile data, and connecting is simple. You can pick up a SIM at Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane or at any operator shop in town, and prices are very low. Coverage is solid along the main tourist trail but can be thin in the mountainous north and remote countryside, so it pays to choose the right network.
Networks & coverage
The three operators are Unitel, Lao Telecom and ETL. Unitel is widely regarded as the best for travelers, with the most extensive nationwide 4G, good performance in smaller towns, and a growing 5G presence in major centres. Lao Telecom has solid coverage in cities and popular destinations but can be slower rurally. ETL is the weakest, reliable mainly in big cities. For the classic route through Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and the 4000 Islands, Unitel gives the most consistent signal.
eSIM or physical SIM?
A physical local SIM is the cheapest option and easy to buy on arrival with your passport; Unitel tourist packs in particular bundle a local number, SMS/OTP support and data. If you would rather land connected, travel eSIMs from Airalo, Saily and Nomad all cover Laos, and Unitel itself offers an eSIM. eSIMs cost more per GB but save you the airport kiosk and keep your home number reachable.
Data, calls & messaging
Travel eSIMs are data-only, which suits Laos well since almost everyone uses apps. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are the go-to messaging tools for travelers and locals, with Facebook itself extremely popular for businesses and guesthouses. If you need a local number for OTP codes or to call hotels and tour operators, a physical Unitel or Lao Telecom SIM is the better pick, as these include SMS and a callable number.
How much data do you need?
For a one- to two-week trip of maps, messaging, social media and light streaming, 5-10 GB is ample. Local tourist packs such as 10 GB for a few days or 30 GB for a couple of weeks are cheap, so it is easy to over-provision for peace of mind. Heavy users and remote workers based in Vientiane or Luang Prabang should opt for a 20 GB-plus plan on Unitel for the steadiest speeds.
