Brunei Darussalam is a small, wealthy sultanate on the island of Borneo with excellent, modern mobile connectivity for its size. Travellers arriving at Brunei International Airport (BWN) in Bandar Seri Begawan will find that staying connected is straightforward, whether through a local prepaid tourist SIM or an international travel eSIM purchased before departure.
Networks & coverage
Brunei has three mobile brands — DST (the market leader), Progresif, and the newer imagine — but since 2020 they all share a single wholesale network operated by Unified National Networks (UNN). In practice this means coverage and speeds are broadly similar whichever brand you use.
4G/LTE covers virtually all populated areas of the country, including Bandar Seri Begawan, Kuala Belait, Seria and the main highways. 5G has been launching across the larger urban centres, so newer handsets can reach faster speeds in the capital region.
eSIM or physical SIM?
Local operators DST and Progresif sell physical tourist SIMs at the airport and at telecom shops in the capital, and local eSIM options are emerging. For most short-stay visitors the simplest route is an international travel eSIM (Airalo, Maya, Nomad and others) that can be installed before you fly and activates the moment you land — no queueing and no passport registration at a counter.
If you want a local number for calls and texts within Brunei, a physical tourist SIM from Progresif or DST is the better choice.
Data, calls & messaging
Progresif offers tourist traveller plans valid for 30 days, including a B$10 tier (1 GB data plus domestic minutes and SMS) and a B$25 unlimited-data tier. DST sells a tourist SIM around B$15 with roughly 3 GB of data plus a few Brunei dollars of call credit. International eSIMs are data-only; use WhatsApp, Viber or other apps for calls and messages.
Note that some tourist data plans throttle speeds, with full 4G/5G speed available via add-on packs in the operator app.
How much data do you need?
For a short visit centred on maps, messaging and the occasional upload, 1–3 GB is plenty. If you plan to stream, video-call home or tether a laptop, choose 5 GB or an unlimited tourist tier. A 7–15 day eSIM in the 2–5 GB range suits most travellers comfortably.
