The Bahamas is a cruise and resort destination where connectivity is easy but pricier than most of the Caribbean. Whether you arrive at Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau or step off a cruise ship, a travel eSIM avoids the marked-up airport SIM kiosks.
Networks & coverage
Two operators cover the islands: BTC (Bahamas Telecommunications Company), the long-established incumbent, and Aliv, the newer challenger. BTC has the broadest reach across the Family Islands and the Out Islands, while Aliv is strong on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama. Both run 4G LTE, and 5G has begun rolling out in Nassau and Freeport — useful where available but not yet island-wide.
eSIM or physical SIM?
For a short cruise stop or a week-long resort stay, a travel eSIM is the simplest and often the cheapest option — local Bahamian SIMs and tourist packs are expensive (BTC SIMs run US$15 in store and US$30–50 at NAS airport). eSIMs roam onto the BTC network. A physical BTC or Aliv SIM only makes sense for longer stays or if you need a local number; buy it in town, not at the airport.
Data, calls & messaging
Expect to pay more here than elsewhere in the region. BTC bundles range from 500 MB at US$2.99 up to 15 GB for 30 days at about US$35; Aliv runs unlimited 30-day plans around US$30. Travel eSIMs are data-only, so use WhatsApp or another VoIP app for calls. If you need a Bahamian number for SMS, choose a local physical SIM.
How much data do you need?
Cruise passengers ashore for a day need very little — 1 GB easily covers maps and messaging. Resort guests with strong hotel Wi-Fi can manage on 3–5 GB for a week. Only heavy streamers or remote workers off Wi-Fi should reach for a 10 GB-plus plan, and given Bahamian pricing a travel eSIM is usually the better deal at those sizes.
