SIM Cards & eSIM in Ecuador

From Quito and Guayaquil to Cuenca and the Galápagos, Ecuador rewards travellers with diverse landscapes — and decent mobile connectivity along the main tourist routes. A local prepaid SIM or a travel eSIM both work well on the mainland, though the Galápagos Islands need special attention.

Networks & coverage

Three operators serve Ecuador: Claro (the largest, with the best nationwide footprint), Movistar and the state-owned CNT. Claro and Movistar both offer solid 4G LTE across cities, the Andean corridor and the coast. 5G remains very limited, so plan around 4G. Coverage in the Amazon basin and remote highlands is patchy. Importantly, the Galápagos Islands have limited connectivity and are often excluded from mainland-only eSIM plans — Claro and CNT have some island coverage, but a global or regional eSIM is the safer bet for the archipelago.

eSIM or physical SIM?

A travel eSIM is convenient and connects on arrival at Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE); most use the Movistar or Claro network. Local SIMs are cheap — Claro’s tourist chip costs around US$4 and CNT’s around US$3 — and are sold at airports and operator stores. Bring your passport for registration. If the Galápagos is on your itinerary, confirm island coverage before relying on any single plan.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs from Airalo and Holafly are data-only; use WhatsApp for calls and messaging. Local Claro, Movistar and CNT prepaid packs bundle data with minutes and SMS at very low prices, which suits longer stays. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so local pricing is easy to read.

How much data do you need?

A week of navigation, messaging and social media fits comfortably in 3–5 GB. Multi-week trips or heavier streaming point to 10 GB or unlimited. If you’re mostly on Wi-Fi at hotels and cafés, 1–3 GB is plenty.
