SIM Cards & eSIM in Bolivia

Americas · 18 plans

Bolivia rewards travellers who sort out a SIM, because data is cheap and coverage reaches most places tourists go — from La Paz and the high-altitude Altiplano down to Santa Cruz. Local SIMs are inexpensive but require a little patience; a travel eSIM is the no-fuss alternative on arrival at El Alto International (LPB) or Viru Viru (VVI).

Networks & coverage

Three carriers compete: Entel, the state-owned operator with the widest national footprint, plus Tigo and Viva. Entel is the safest pick for the broadest coverage, including rural and high-altitude areas around La Paz, Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni salt flats. Tigo is competitive in the main cities and often has the fastest urban data; Viva is the smallest of the three. Coverage can be patchy on remote routes, so Entel’s reach is the differentiator.

eSIM or physical SIM?

A physical local SIM is very cheap — about 10 BOB (US$1.50) at an Entel, Tigo or Viva store — but you may need your passport to register it and the process is easier in a city branch than at the airport. A travel eSIM costs more per gigabyte but is instant and hassle-free, roaming mostly onto Entel. For short trips or if you do not want to deal with registration, the eSIM wins; for longer stays, a local Entel SIM is the value choice.

Data, calls & messaging

Bolivia is firmly a 4G LTE country — there is no meaningful consumer 5G yet. Local prepaid data is among the cheapest in the region: Entel and Tigo sell short tourist packs in the 30–60 BOB range, with Tigo offering options like 1 GB for 55 BOB or 8 GB for 200 BOB. Travel eSIMs are data-only; use WhatsApp for calls, or buy a local SIM if you need a Bolivian number.

How much data do you need?

For a one- to two-week trip of navigation, messaging and photo uploads, 3–5 GB is plenty, especially as hostels and cafés in La Paz, Sucre and Santa Cruz offer Wi-Fi. Multi-week travellers or those tethering a laptop should consider a 10 GB local Entel bundle for the best value.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
