SIM Cards & eSIM in Chile

Americas · 17 plans

Chile has one of Latin America’s most advanced mobile markets, with Entel, Movistar, Claro and the disruptor WOM all running extensive 4G LTE and a genuinely broad 5G rollout — Chile was the region’s 5G pioneer. Coverage stretches impressively along the long, thin country, from the Atacama in the north to the Lakes District, with Entel reaching furthest into rural and remote zones. Travelers can buy a cheap local SIM or install a travel eSIM before arrival.

Networks & coverage

Entel has the widest coverage and the strongest reach into the Atacama, Patagonia gateways and remote highways, making it the go-to for road trips; Movistar and Claro are excellent in Santiago, Valparaíso and the central valley; WOM offers cheap, capable urban 4G/5G. 5G is widely available across Santiago and most regional capitals — among the best in Latin America. Travel eSIMs usually roam on Entel or Movistar, so you get strong city data and good highway coverage, with deep Patagonia still the main weak spot.

eSIM or physical SIM?

Local prepaid SIMs are inexpensive and sold at the airport and carrier stores; registration is light compared with some neighbors. A local SIM is great value for longer stays and road trips where Entel’s rural reach matters. A travel eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily, Ubigi) is the friction-free choice for shorter visits: install before you fly, land connected, and skip the airport kiosk queues — handy if you’re catching a quick connection south.

Data, calls & messaging

Travel eSIMs are data-only and WhatsApp dominates for calls and messaging in Chile, so a data plan plus WhatsApp covers most needs. A local Entel or Movistar SIM gives a Chilean number with cheap domestic calls, useful for booking refugios, tours and transfers in Patagonia. For a typical Santiago-plus-south itinerary, a generous data eSIM and WhatsApp do the job nicely.

How much data do you need?

A week of navigation, messaging and browsing fits in 3–5 GB. Two weeks taking in Santiago, the wine country and the Lakes District with social media suits about 10 GB. Remote workers and heavy streamers should plan for 15–20 GB or an unlimited day plan. On long drives through the Atacama or toward Patagonia, signal gaps appear between towns, so download maps and entertainment in advance.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
