SIM Cards & eSIM in Guatemala

Americas · 18 plans

Guatemala is straightforward for travellers who want to stay connected, with two dominant operators and cheap prepaid data. A travel eSIM gets you online the moment you land at La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, while a local SIM is the budget option for longer stays.

Networks & coverage

Two carriers matter in Guatemala: Tigo and Claro. Tigo has the widest geographic footprint and is the more reliable choice if you are heading to highland villages, Lake Atitlán, Tikal or smaller indigenous towns, where Claro coverage can thin out. In Guatemala City, Antigua and Quetzaltenango both networks perform well. Movistar exited the market and its spectrum was absorbed, so Tigo and Claro are effectively the only live mobile networks.

eSIM or physical SIM?

If your phone supports eSIM, a travel eSIM from a global brand is the simplest route — no shopping, no Spanish required, and you are online on arrival. These eSIMs roam onto the Tigo or Claro network. A physical local SIM is cheaper per gigabyte and worth it for stays of two weeks or more; buy it in a city Tigo or Claro shop rather than at the airport, where tourist packs are heavily marked up (GUA airport SIMs can cost 150 GTQ / about US$19 for a tiny bundle).

Data, calls & messaging

Guatemala runs on 4G LTE nationwide; there is no live consumer 5G network yet. Local prepaid bundles are excellent value — a Tigo tourist pack offers 10 GB plus free social apps, 200 minutes and SMS for 30 days at around 99 GTQ (about US$13), and Claro sells 10 GB for 30 days at roughly 100 GTQ. Most travel eSIMs are data-only; if you need a local number for calls and SMS, buy a physical Tigo or Claro SIM.

How much data do you need?

For a one- to two-week trip of maps, messaging and the occasional video call, 3–5 GB is comfortable. Heavy users streaming or tethering should look at 10 GB or more. Wi-Fi is common in Antigua and Guatemala City hotels and cafés, so you can lean on it to stretch a smaller bundle.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
