SIM Cards & eSIM in Tonga

Oceania · 10 plans

Tonga is a remote Polynesian kingdom spread across more than 170 islands, and staying connected here means relying on one of two local carriers. Coverage is strong around the capital Nuku’alofa on the main island of Tongatapu, but thins out quickly on the outer island groups of Ha’apai and Vava’u. A handful of global eSIM brands now roam onto the Digicel network, which makes Tonga one of the easier Pacific micro-destinations to set up before you fly.

Networks & coverage

Tonga has two mobile operators: Digicel Tonga and TCC (Tonga Communications Corporation, branded U-Call). Both run 4G/LTE around Nuku’alofa and the more populated islands, with no 5G deployed. Digicel generally has the broader and faster footprint on Tongatapu and is the network most travel eSIMs connect to. Expect patchy-to-no signal on remote atolls and while island-hopping by boat.

eSIM or physical SIM?

An eSIM is the most convenient option if your phone supports it — Airalo and several other global providers sell Tonga plans that roam onto Digicel, so you land already connected. If you want a local number for calls and SMS, or you are staying a while, a physical Digicel or U-Call SIM bought in Nuku’alofa is cheap and easy. SIM purchase and registration costs only a few pa’anga, and top-ups are sold widely.

Data, calls & messaging

Global travel eSIMs for Tonga are data-only — use WhatsApp, Messenger or iMessage for calls and texts over data. A local prepaid SIM gives you a Tongan number plus voice and SMS, with data bundles activated by dialling a USSD code (*123# on Digicel) or through the operator app. Local data is bought in time-limited bundles (1-day, 7-day, 14-day and 30-day options are common).

How much data do you need?

For a one- to two-week trip of maps, messaging and the occasional upload, 3–5 GB is plenty. Light users checking email and chat can get by on 1–2 GB. If you plan to stream, video-call home regularly or tether a laptop, look at a 10 GB bundle or one of the Digicel-backed unlimited eSIM passes. Remember that data only works where there is coverage, so on outer islands a smaller bundle often goes a long way.

How we compile this data

Plan data is compiled from the public pricing pages of mobile operators, MVNOs, and eSIM providers serving each destination.

Listings are reviewed by the DROAM telecom desk and kept neutral — we surface a representative sample of options rather than promote any single provider.

Operators change allowances and pricing frequently, so we update entries as plans change and always link out to the provider for the current offer.
