Fiji is a South Pacific nation of more than 300 islands, with mobile coverage concentrated on the two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, plus the popular tourist routes and resort areas. Local prepaid data is remarkably cheap and generous, while networks are predominantly 4G with only limited 5G so far.
Networks & coverage
Two operators serve the islands: Vodafone Fiji and Digicel Fiji. Vodafone has the most reliable reach across Viti Levu and the main tourist corridors, while Digicel competes hard on price. Both cover the Nadi–Denarau–Coral Coast belt well; remote outer islands and parts of the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups can be patchier.
eSIM or physical SIM?
Picking up a local physical SIM is the clear winner on value. Vodafone and Digicel both staff 24-hour kiosks in the Nadi (NAN) airport arrivals hall — Vodafone on the left, Digicel on the right — with cheap, data-heavy tourist bundles. Global travel eSIMs work but cost far more for far less data, and typically ride the Vodafone or Digicel network.
Data, calls & messaging
Local tourist bundles pack huge data allowances and often unlimited local calls and SMS for a few Fijian dollars — ideal for coordinating boat transfers and island-hopping. Travel eSIMs are data-only, leaving calls and messaging to internet apps over the data plan.
How much data do you need?
Thanks to bargain local pricing, even casual users can grab tens of gigabytes for a handful of dollars, so data anxiety is rarely an issue. For a week of maps, social posts and video calls, a mid-tier 45–130 GB local bundle is more than enough; eSIM users will more realistically work with 3–10 GB.
