The Federated States of Micronesia spans four states — Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap and Kosrae — across a wide expanse of the western Pacific. Connectivity is provided almost entirely by the state telecom and is limited to the main islands, so travellers should plan on a basic, local prepaid setup.
Networks & coverage
FSM Telecommunications Corporation (FSMTC, branded FSM Telecom) is the national operator. Mobile coverage is available on the four main islands of Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap and Kosrae; outer islands have little or no service. FSMTC runs 2G/GSM with 3G/UMTS and 4G in the main centres, alongside a network of public Wi-Fi hotspots.
eSIM or physical SIM?
There is no reliable travel-eSIM coverage for Micronesia. The practical option is a physical FSMTC SIM bought in an FSM Telecom store in Pohnpei or the other state capitals. Data is purchased using prepaid TelCards (in $5/$10/$20 denominations) and activated via a USSD menu (*000#).
Data, calls & messaging
A SIM costs around $10, and credit is loaded via TelCards. Mobile data plans are ordered from the prepaid menu; FSMTC also sells prepaid Wi-Fi access at its hotspots, historically priced per megabyte, which can be expensive for heavy use. Voice and SMS work normally on the covered islands.
How much data do you need?
For messaging, maps and light browsing across a stay on Pohnpei or another main island, 1–3 GB is generally sufficient. Avoid relying on streaming, and budget extra if you plan to use the per-megabyte public Wi-Fi rather than a mobile data bundle.
