South African operator Rain plans a multi-thousand-site sub-1GHz massive MIMO 5G expansion with Huawei. Rain has already deployed sub-1GHz massive MIMO in several major cities across South Africa.
Huawei says the deployment has improved uplink coverage by 5 dB and downlink coverage by 3 dB. Huawei also says network capacity has risen by up to three times versus conventional 4T4R antenna systems.
Why the low-band angle matters
Huawei says extending massive MIMO to low-band FDD spectrum supports wide-area coverage, deep indoor penetration, and gains in capacity and spectral efficiency. That is the practical pitch behind taking a technique usually associated with higher-band capacity layers and pushing it into coverage spectrum.
