Vodafone is trialing the use of Cloud, Edge & Network Infrastructure across Amazon Web Services (AWS) to run IoT voice and data network applications on Nokia core systems.

In the first phase, Vodafone, Nokia and AWS deployed a proof-of-concept of Nokias mobile data core and voice core on AWS in Frankfurt, combining it with network components in Vodafone data centers across several European countries.

The Vodafone trial uses AWS cloud infrastructure to run IoT voice and data network applications on Nokia core systems.

The trial also targets Nokia core capabilities that can provide an emergency calling facility in vehicles and elevators.

Frankfurt proof-of-concept with Vodafone data-center components

During the first phase, Vodafone, Nokia and AWS deployed a proof-of-concept of Nokias mobile data core and voice core on the AWS cloud platform in Frankfurt.

The proof-of-concept pairs the AWS-hosted Nokia core deployment with network components located in Vodafone data centers across several European countries.

Next phase focuses on security and sovereignty before commercial trials

Vodafone said the next phase of the trials will address security and sovereignty issues ahead of full-on commercial trials later in the year.

Vodafone also said that adopting a multicloud strategy gives it a better chance of capitalizing on advances in technology, including agentic AI, to improve the customer experience.
