ADTRAN has pitched its Optical Networking Edge portfolio and Advanced Operational Environment as a way for carriers to avoid capital-intensive overlay builds for 4G backhaul services.

The company says the pair is meant to help operators meet stringent service-level agreements while keeping broadband and cell-site backhaul on a single architecture. ADTRAN also frames ONE as a way to provide service separation across residential customers, business customers, and cell sites over the same infrastructure.

How ADTRAN is positioning ONE and AOE

ADTRAN says ONE delivers MEF-certified, wavelength-separated Ethernet services across the network, while AOE is meant to shift management focus from the equipment to the service.

Robert Conger, ADTRAN Carrier Ethernet product line manager, said ONE was developed to solve the bandwidth bottleneck at the edge of the network and AOE was developed to shift management focus to the service rather than the equipment.
