Vitro, the data centre arm of PLDT Group, partnered with BBIX Philippines to establish a direct peering connection between BBIX and its Vitro Internet Exchange (VIX), with an initial 100G network-to-network interconnection deployed at its Makati 2 data centre.
The partnership was announced on Thursday, and Vitro expects to expand the interconnection capacity over time in line with traffic growth and evolving demand.
How the direct BBIX–VIX peering is set up
The connection uses a network-to-network interconnection that Vitro deployed initially at its Makati 2 data centre to begin the peering between BBIX and VIX.
Vitro frames the move as a way to enable more efficient traffic exchange through direct peering, rather than relying on indirect paths.
What enterprises are expected to gain
Enterprises connected to both BBIX and VIX are expected to benefit from improved routing and reduced latency, along with enhanced access to content and digital services.
Vitro’s view is that direct peering reduces connectivity gaps and optimises traffic routes, supporting more efficient traffic flow and improved access to both regional and international content.
VIX’s local ecosystem and BBIX’s peering footprint
VIX’s local ecosystem includes access to over 98 million internet users in the Philippines, alongside a growing base of enterprises, carriers, and hyperscalers hosted within Vitro’s carrier-neutral data centres.
BBIX also positions the partnership around its global peering expertise and an ecosystem of content from cloud service providers, content platforms, content delivery networks, and other technology solution providers.
Executive comments from Gary F. Ignacio and Toya Oba
Vitro’s chief commercial officer Gary F. Ignacio said direct peering between BBIX and VIX would reduce connectivity gaps and optimise traffic routes, while also enabling efficient traffic flow and reduced latency.
BBIX general manager Toya Oba added that direct peering with VIX delivers more efficient and reliable connectivity that supports growing demand for digital services in the country.
