Orange opens French teleport for Telesat’s Lightspeed build

Orange inaugurated a teleport in Bercenay-en-Othe, France, as the first customer, Telesat, prepares its Telesat LightSpeed constellation. The site is built to link low-Earth-orbit satellite traffic to fiber backbones and operator points of presence on Earth (via www.lemagit.fr).

Orange will use the teleport to connect Telesat’s satellites to a Paris data-center point of presence through high-capacity fiber also supplied by Orange.

Telesat’s launch plan and Orange’s fiber role

Telesat plans to launch a 225-satellite constellation called Telesat LightSpeed in the first quarter of 2028. Orange’s teleport will sit between that orbital network and the terrestrial fiber path into Paris.

The arrangement gives Telesat a French landing point for its traffic while Orange supplies both the teleport and the high-capacity fiber into the data-center point of presence.

Orange’s other satellite links

Orange also has an agreement with Skylo, a U.S. company that decodes 5G signals from mobile phones and relays them from geostationary satellites without processing them.

Orange is also working with AST SpaceMobile on a similar project, with signal decoding embedded in a low-Earth-orbit constellation called BlueBird. AST SpaceMobile has launched 13 satellites so far, but they are not yet operational.

The article says the main European use cases for satellite internet are professional services, including internet access for maritime, logistics and tourism transport, as well as resilience for sensitive sites.

Droam Perspective

For satellite connectivity buyers, this is a concrete reminder that the ground segment still shapes who can reach which users and where traffic lands. Orange is now disclosing a French teleport, a Paris point of presence, and a second customer path alongside Telesat, which matters more than the vendor’s claims about ecosystem position.

The broader European use cases cited here are professional rather than consumer-led, which fits the transport and resilience angles described in the source. Orange’s separate work with Skylo and AST SpaceMobile also shows that the company is not betting on a single satellite architecture.
