Telefónica embeds generative AI in business voice services in Spain

Telefónica has embedded generative AI into its business voice services in Spain, covering corporate mobile lines, Centrex IP virtual PBX offerings, and Centrex 365.

The operator says business calls on its network can now be transcribed and summarized, and in some cases handled entirely by AI. The launch is aimed at Telefónica’s domestic enterprise market in Spain.

Voice AI inside the network stack

Telefónica has built a modular AI voice agent platform using large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, workflow orchestration, and long-term memory. The platform integrates with IMS for call control and SIP interaction, and connects to CRM and BSS systems for customer, billing, and subscription data.

Audio from live calls is processed locally on AI-ready edge nodes deployed across Spain. Telefónica’s edge data centers are part of work with Nokia.

Network-native voice versus application-layer tools

The article says Microsoft’s, AWS’s, Genesys’s, and Salesforce’s AI-powered voice features operate at the application layer rather than as native network capabilities. Telefónica is taking the opposite path by treating AI as a network capability rather than an overlay.

For Telefónica’s domestic enterprise customers, the relevant point is that the company is putting AI directly into the voice service rather than requiring a separate software layer. That makes transcription, summarization, and AI handling part of the service design, not an add-on.
