TRAI orders IP interconnection from January 2027

TRAI mandated IP-based interconnection for all new telecom connections from January 1, 2027, and ordered phased migration of legacy links.

TRAI orders IP interconnection from January 2027

India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority has mandated IP-based interconnection for all new telecom connections starting January 1, 2027. Existing E1 and time-division multiplexing interconnections must move to IP-based systems in phases under the 2026 amendment regulations (via telecomlead.com).

The rules are built around routing, latency, call quality, and numbering efficiency. TRAI also added capacity-augmentation rules, voluntary surrender of unused interconnection points, revised bank-guarantee assessments, interest on delayed interconnection payments, and graded financial disincentives for violations.

Vodafone Business deepens the NYU WIRELESS link

Vodafone Business has joined NYU WIRELESS at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering as an affiliate. The partnership covers wireless communications, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, with joint research and co-authored white papers planned on spectrum, UK digital sovereignty, and resilient communications.

NYU London will serve as the partnership’s UK base and host events with researchers, Vodafone Business, government representatives, and industry leaders. VodafoneThree is investing £11 billion (≈ $14.7 billion) in its UK network, and Vodafone Business joins an affiliate group that includes Nokia, Ericsson, Apple, and Qualcomm.

Verizon turns Ericsson software into an automation test bed

Verizon will deploy Ericsson Intelligent Controller nationwide during 2026 to automate radio access network operations. In live-network deployments, Ericsson’s Advanced Antenna System Cell Shaper application delivered up to 8.9 percent improvement in downlink data radio bearer throughput and 8 percent improvement in uplink user-equipment throughput.

Verizon also implemented automated handover from LTE to 5G Standalone for fixed wireless access devices, removing manual intervention after handover failures. The platform supports more than 100 available rApps from an ecosystem of more than 100 members, and Verizon plans additional AI-based anomaly detection, root-cause analysis, and network optimization applications as it moves toward Level 4 network autonomy.

What it means for U.S. buyers

For U.S. carriers and enterprise buyers with fixed wireless access deployments, Verizon’s move shows how handover behavior and network automation are becoming operational decisions, not just vendor feature claims. The same live-network metrics and the planned nationwide controller rollout point to a carrier choice that now includes how much control the provider has over radio access network operations.

Droam Perspective

For wireless carriers and network teams, the signal is not just that automation is advancing; it is that the control plane is becoming a commercial and operational choice. TRAI’s interconnection rules, Vodafone Business’s research tie-up, and Verizon’s Ericsson rollout all point to network behavior that is now being specified, measured, and governed in more explicit terms.

That is a useful read for buyers, but it is also a reminder that the same network layer can show up as regulation in one market, research in another, and automation software in a third. The details differ; the pressure to make the network more legible does not.
