Quectel is bringing Android 16 to its 4G and 5G smart module portfolio for IoT devices. The company says the modules combine cellular connectivity, application processing, and software in a single embedded platform.
Which modules now carry Android 16
Quectel says Android 16 support extends across several smart modules for 4G and 5G applications. The LTE Cat 4 SH602FA is offered with Android 16, and the 5G SE505FE is also offered with Android 16.
The 5G SG520B supports multiple Android generations, including Android 16. That gives Quectel three named module paths in the announcement: two on Android 16 directly and one on a multi-version software line.
Where Quectel is positioning smart modules
The article says smart modules can provide both the communications layer and the main computing environment in devices such as industrial handhelds, payment terminals, smart displays, and other multimedia-rich equipment.
That shifts the module conversation beyond radio support alone. In this framing, the embedded software layer sits alongside connectivity and processing inside the same package.
Android 16 as a lifecycle issue
The article says device makers moving to Android 16 may need additional validation when applications, peripherals, or device-management systems were built around earlier Android releases.
It also says industrial and enterprise IoT products typically have much longer lifecycles than smartphones. For buyers and integrators, that means the operating system release is part of the deployment checklist, not just the cellular spec sheet.
Read for IoT device makers and module buyers
Quectel’s Android 16 support gives OEMs a concrete software baseline to compare across 4G and 5G smart modules. The practical issue is whether existing applications, peripherals, and device-management systems can move with it.
For industrial and enterprise deployments, the longer lifecycle makes that compatibility check harder to skip.
