Univity and Telkomsat signed a memorandum of understanding to explore satellite connectivity in Indonesia, with the work announced on Monday. The satellite connectivity project covers very low Earth orbit architecture and future direct-to-device services.
The two companies also plan to look at satellite connectivity solutions for enterprise and mobility applications, as well as unserved and underserved areas. Univity has said it plans to build a very low Earth orbit constellation that would act as neutral space infrastructure for telecom operators to access satellite connectivity.
Indonesia ground segment and hybrid orbit plans
The memorandum will also explore hosted ground infrastructure in Indonesia and hybrid multi-orbit architectures that combine Telkomsat’s geostationary orbit network with Univity’s network. That puts the discussion beyond a simple service trial and into the shape of the wider delivery model.
Univity raised 27 million euro earlier this year. Telkomsat Chief of Development Anggoro K. Widiawan said satellite connectivity remains important for Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, especially across remote and geographically dispersed areas. He added that the memorandum could help explore how emerging satellite architectures and future non-terrestrial network capabilities might address connectivity needs across the country.
What this means for satellite connectivity buyers
For enterprise and mobility buyers, the useful signal is that the partners are not only testing VLEO and direct-to-device concepts, but also linking them to ground infrastructure and a multi-orbit setup. That suggests the commercial discussion is being framed around actual deployment paths, not just spectrum or launch ambition.
For Telkomsat, the MoU keeps the focus on Indonesia-specific infrastructure and on reaching remote areas through non-terrestrial network options. For Univity, it extends a VLEO pitch that already depends on telecom operators acting as access points into its planned satellite layer.
